Jokingly, a friend and I were commenting about my blog and then it soon led to the acronym WOFT’s veritably unlimited variations. She’d suggested something along the lines of “world order for the great … damn i forgot it *lol”. It got me thinking that I could very well change the title when I feel a good one has been put together. So what once was “World Of Fragged Typos” which was a nod to my incorrigible penchant for correcting people’s spelling and grammar much to their chagrin, this new one “Wealth Of Fancy Titles” which would be an analysis of the beauty of Acronyms.
No matter how you look at them, acronyms can be informative, funny, memorable, or just plain confusing. Here is the dictionary meaning for it:
1. a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words, as Wac from Women’s Army Corps, OPEC from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or loran from long-range navigation.
2. an acrostic.
–verb (used with object)
3. to make an acronym of: The committee’s name has been acronymed MIKE.
1940–45; acr- + -onym
Acronyms have their uses, primarily used in the technical field, but they have grown in application into every day conversation, especially now with the creation of Netspeak. LOL, ROFL, WTF, FTW… it goes on, and will most likely continue to expand its vocabulary as society’s cultural aspects shape and change the world.
